Rove Journal #10
OFFICIALLY A WRITER & adventures on pause
Buy my prints or buy me a coffee.
Hi Everyone,
We are officially in the journals double digits!! This feels like a mini milestone and I am so pleased I have managed to stay consistent here, I really have enjoyed this corner of the internet.
Though I only started ‘properly’ writing in mid-august last year, I have had some really cool opportunities come up recently which has meant that my writing and photographs are getting published on two other publications. I still can’t quite believe that I can officially add writer to my CV. Growing up I was never the academic type, that title was reserved for my extremely intellectual and learning obsessed sister. I was more the athletic type, always at gymnastics or playing netball. Though I always enjoyed writing, I just never found something I wanted to write about. I used to get overwhelmed with inspiration whenever my family and I would holiday in new places and I’d write stories about fictional people’s lives there but never finish them. It wasn’t until I felt that overwhelming inspiration and had my photographs to document the day that it came more naturally to me. This piece is still my favourite to date.
I started this substack last summer after I had filled up my journal with writings that didn’t really belong in that space. I didn’t think anyone would ever read my articles and that was almost the reason why I did it. Alas, here we are, a mere 7 months later, with over 1300 subscribers and I have just been paid to have my words and photographs published for a photography brand’s journals online. I am so thankful to everyone who supports me in this space, it’s definitely given me the confidence to pursue writing along with my photographs!
As for roving, I spent 3 weeks in glorious Scotland, it was beautiful as always and I am already itching to get back. I’m hoping next time I go, the weather is warmer and Ben Nevis will be on the itinerary! As for now I’m back in London, my van requires a service (booooo!!) and I have to stay here until it’s completed, why are the wait times so long?! It’s beginning to get me down, I’m feeling ‘stuck’ and have an overwhelming need to be by the ocean. Normally I’d just hop in the cab, head down to Eastbourne and carry on my life at the edge of the ocean until I’m required to be anywhere else. That’s the luxury of having a home on wheels, I can be wherever my heart desires whenever I’d like. A privilege I am currently deeply missing, as it makes life as a photographer so much easier too.
I am, however, planning a trip back up to the Lakes for some springtime hiking and photography. As soon as my van is sorted I am going to hit the road and head north again to the mountains. I spent a month in the Lake District this time last year and it’s a memory I am extremely fond of, the weather was beautiful and I hiked, journaled and photographed to my hearts content. With the promise of spring on the horizon, I am super excited to get back and explore some new corners of the national park. Hopefully I can write some more pieces like the one linked earlier in this journal, the Lakes definitely having this inspiring magic that makes it easy to write.
Life has been a complete whirlwind since 2026 started, my time is being divided in ways I haven’t really experienced before and though I am endlessly grateful to have the life I was begging for this time last year, I am feeling a little like I’m struggling to fit everything in. Balancing relationships with every one I love who live in houses, but living on the road myself and not always being local, is hard. This (very small) amount of time that I am unable to travel about has made me realise how much I adore my life on the road and also how much I can and will miss out on when I get back to travelling again.
I am SO excited to get out with my cameras in the next few weeks. I feel as though I haven’t spent as much time with them this year and I’m hoping that changes over the coming weeks. The Lake District always brings an incredible canvas no matter the weather so I can’t wait to be there and capture it from a new perspective.
Thanks so much for reading, as always, I can’t wait to share my photography articles for both Moment and Sony with you!!
Speak soon, H x
